Derek Redmond is a world-renowned athlete turned high-performance motivational speaker, celebrated for his extraordinary resilience, leadership insight, and ability to inspire peak performance. His remarkable career spans Olympic and World Championship success, professional basketball, and senior leadership roles in performance management. Once Group Performance Director at Thomas International—the world’s largest psychometric assessment company operating in over 70 countries—Derek now empowers organisations worldwide through keynote speaking, focusing on mental resilience, diversity and inclusion, leadership, motivation, and building high-performance teams.
Derek first rose to prominence in 1985 when he broke the British 400m record, earning selection for Team GB. He went on to claim Gold in the 4x400m relay at the 1986 European Championships and Silver at the 1987 World Championships. In 1991, he achieved the pinnacle of his athletics career, winning Gold at the Tokyo World Championships to become a World Champion. His Olympic journey was repeatedly challenged by injury, including a forced withdrawal from the 1988 Games. At the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, Derek suffered a torn hamstring mid-race, yet produced one of the most iconic moments in sporting history by completing the race with the support of his father—an enduring symbol of courage, perseverance, and the human spirit.
Following his retirement from athletics in 1994, Derek transitioned into professional basketball, playing for the Birmingham Bullets and the England National Team. As one of the faces of British basketball, he competed at the highest level, playing against legends such as Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan.
Beyond elite sport, Derek built a distinguished career in performance leadership. He served as Director of Development for UK Athletics, overseeing sprint and hurdles development, and later as Group Performance Director for Thomas International. He has also held roles as CEO of Olympex, Non-Executive Director, Nike Ambassador, and is a proud UCLA alumnus. Drawing on his unique experiences, Derek authored the bestselling book Sport Is A Business and Business Is A Sport, bridging the worlds of elite sport and organisational leadership.
